Illicium parviflorum, an evergreen shrub native to north-central Florida, creates a superb natural, thick hedge. Its conal form requires less trimming, making it perfect for shaded settings. Yellow Ocala Anise may develop into a big shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 10 to 15 feet and widths of 6 to 10 feet, offering great seclusion and wind protection. When crushed, the elliptical-shaped leaves exude a fragrant anise perfume, and the shrub blooms in the spring with modest olive-green flowers followed by star-shaped seed pods. Despite its resemblance to the Star Anise bush, the licorice-scented seed pods and leaves are not edible and should be avoided. This moderate-to-fast-growing plant spreads by suckering, creating colonies from the root mass. The Yellow Ocala Anise loves sandy, acidic soils, but it can tolerate a variety of soil types, including humid and dry conditions.
