- Passion Flowers are native to Brazil and Argentina and are an absolute must-have for any romance, heirloom, or butterfly garden. All passion vine flowers are unique and unlike any other flowering plant. In the early 1600s, Catholic priests in Peru documented what they believed to be a religious symbolism in the unique flowers of this beautiful vine. The priests related the parts of the flower to features of the Crucifixion, and thus the name passiflora or passion flower was coined.
- The Lady Margaret Passion Flower Vine is a Passiflora hybrid. It is a lush, dense-growing vine with medium green lobed leaves that is resilient and easy to grow. The unique flowers appear profusely throughout the warm season in deep, maroon, pink-toned red with a pastel pink to white center ringed by long, speckled filaments. Nectar-rich flowers provide a pollinator food source, but plants are not a preferred caterpillar host. Generally considered sterile and non-fruiting
- Care: For optimal growth, plant your passion flower in a partial-shade location with fertile, well-draining soil and a trellis or other support. Water deeply, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid spindly growth. Fertilize with a quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer in the spring, and prune as needed after flowering to control size.
- Indoor Growing: Most Passiflora Vines can be grown indoors, but may require substantial modifications to increase light, temperature, and humidity to produce flowers. To grow indoors, place the plant in a pot with good drainage and position it in bright, indirect light. A small trellis can provide necessary support. Misting the leaves can help maintain the humidity.
- Climate: This vine is well-suited for USDA Zones 8 to 10. In warmer Zone 10 climates, a moderately shaded location is recommended.
