• This variety of Calathea was recently reclassified as Goeppertia majestica Fusion. This genus of plants is still commonly referred to as Prayer Plants due to their leaves tendency to shift position throughout the day. Fusion a/k/a White Calathea is a somewhat rare cultivar that has highly variegated leaves with large white segments that break up the top side of the broad, oval, rich dark green leaves and contrast nicely with the deep magenta-purple undersides.
• Calathea Fusion White plants are prized for their stunning foliage, and while they do occasionally produce small, inconspicuous white or yellow flowers, they are not the primary reason for growing this plant. Plants growing indoors seldom produce flowers.
• Care: Calatheas can be a bit finicky, but they are rewarding. They prefer consistently moist, well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater, as they are very sensitive to tap water chemicals. They thrive in bright, indirect light; direct sun can scorch leaves and too little light can diminish variegation. Fertilize with a balanced, half-strength, water-soluble fertilizer during the spring and summer.
• Indoor Growing: The Hercules Begonia can be grown indoors with modifications to provide additional light and day/night temperature differential of at least 10 degrees when plants break dormancy.
• Climate: Calathea Fusion a/k/a White Calathea is a tropical perennial recommended for USDA Growing Zones 10, 11 and 12. This plant is highly cold sensitive, is not frost-tolerant and must be kept in an environment above 60 degrees F to thrive. It can be grown outdoors in appropriate climates but requires cold protection. It is most commonly grown as an indoor houseplant in all others.
