The picture you see is the pink spring growth which slowly fades to white with the leaf edges remaining pink. The variegation is very random and varies from year to year. It is a slow grower to 4-5’ in ten years, and upright growth habit, eventually making a small tree 10-12’ tall. Vertrees says ‘This cultivar is highly desirable and attracts much attention but is still rather rare.' The Japanese translation means ‘red and changing’. Introduced from Japan in 1967.
