Details: Pink Bromeliad Aechmea fasciata (Silver Vase Plant / Urn Plant) – Stunning Air Plant – Easy Care Epiphyte – Perfect for Decorative Displays and Terrariums. from 18-20 in height Description: Aechmea fasciata, commonly known as the Silver Vase Plant or Urn Plant, is a popular bromeliad species. This tropical plant is native to Brazil and is highly regarded for its unique appearance, featuring silver-gray banded leaves that grow in a rosette formation, creating a vase or urn shape in the center. From this central 'vase,' the plant produces a stunning pink bract with small blue flowers that eventually turn red, adding a beautiful touch of color. The bloom can last for several months, making it a prized decorative plant. Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves. If grown indoors, a spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may bloom less frequently. Watering: Water the central 'vase' or 'cup' in the rosette, as this is where the plant naturally holds water. Empty and refill the vase regularly to prevent stagnant water, which can lead to rot. Water the soil sparingly, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it’s best to keep the soil on the drier side. Mist the leaves occasionally to increase humidity, especially in dry environments. Humidity: As a tropical plant, Aechmea fasciata enjoys higher humidity levels. If your home is dry, consider using a humidifier or placing a water tray near the plant. Misting the plant once or twice a week can also help maintain humidity. Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts and keep it in a warm environment. It’s sensitive to temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix, ideally one formulated for bromeliads or orchids. Standard potting soil may retain too much moisture for this plant. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer). You can also apply fertilizer directly to the central cup, but make sure it’s highly diluted to avoid burning the plant. Repotting: Aechmea fasciata does not need frequent repotting. Once it has finished blooming, the mother plant will eventually produce pups (small offsets) around the base. The mother plant will slowly die after blooming, but you can separate and repot the pups to continue growing new plants. Propagation: After flowering, the plant produces offsets or 'pups' around its base. Wait until the pups are about half the size of the mother plant, then carefully separate them and pot them individually to propagate. Additional Tips: Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. The plant is generally non-toxic to pets, but it’s still wise to keep pets from chewing on it. Expect a long life for the plant, as it can thrive for several years if given proper care. Key Benefits: Aechmea fasciata is not only beautiful but also low-maintenance, making it an ideal choice for indoor decoration. Its vibrant pink bract can last for months, adding long-lasting color to any space, and it improves indoor air quality by removing toxins from the air.
